Smith River Clean-Up
The Smith River Clean-Up was held August 6, 2011 and resulted in 2 tons of trash and debris being collected. Volunteers included the Dan River Basin Association, Smith River Adventure Outfitters, Smith River Ducks Unlimited, City of Martinsville, Henry County, Martinsville Sheriff's Department, and area citizens. This year Gateway partnered with the Smith River Ducks Unlimited, Dan River Basin Association and supplies were provided by Clean Virginia Waterways. We greatly appreciate all of our volunteers who made this a successful event.
Household Hazardous Waste Day
The Household Hazardous Waste Day event was held October 1, 2011 in Bassett. The event allows residents from the City of Martinsville and Henry County to properly dispose of solvents, paints, fuels, automobile fluids and computer components at no cost to area citizens. The event was well attended with 92 area residents droping off their hazardous waste. Over 1,000 gallons of hazadous material was collected. Special thanks to Environmental Options, EMI, Henry County, City of Martinsville, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and other volunteers for helping to make this event possible.
