Who is the Department of Public Safety?
The Department of Public Safety coordinates all emergency services in Henry County. Department personnel includes administration personnel who direct and coordinate the efforts to the department and work to keep the department and community in a state of readiness in the event a disaster were to strike.
The administration includes:
- Deputy Director/Division Chief of Training and Volunteer Coordination
- Division Chief of Operations
- Division Chief of Fire Prevention/Fire Marshal
- Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention/Assistant Fire Marshal
- Assistant Chief of Training and Volunteer Coordination
- Assistant Chief of Operations
- An Administrative assistant
The department also provides full-time and part-time EMTs and Paramedic-Firefighters to assist the volunteers of Henry County with responses to medical, trauma, rescue, and fire-related emergencies. To apply for employment as an EMT/Paramedic/Firefighter complete the Employment Application for HCDPS.
Equipment for Emergency Management includes a mobile command post, hazardous materials response trailer, mobile air supply unit, mass casualty incident response trailer, decontamination trailer, sheltering supplies, technical hazardous operations unit, and advanced life support ambulances. The Department also maintains a 5-story burn training structure, a fire backdraft simulator, and various hazardous material training props used to provide training for both our local responders and those from all over the state.
The Department provides administrative and training support to eight all-volunteer fire companies and five rescue squads. Firefighter 1 and 2 and National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) training are free through funding by the Virginia Office of EMS and Henry County to volunteers along with CPR and Continuing Education classes. Volunteer response is a critical component of the Henry County Emergency Services system.
