Fund to pay PSA back-due amounts virtually untouched

~ Disconnections to resume Monday, September 14 ~

The Henry County Public Service Authority will resume disconnections for past-due accounts on September 14, and the funds set aside to assist residential customers with their bills remains virtually untouched.

Henry County allocated $200,000 to the Henry-Martinsville Department of Social Services (HMDSS) to assist PSA residential customers with unpaid utility bills. This money was part of the CARES Act allocation to Henry County to assist residents with COVID-19 issues.

However, as of September 8, only three PSA customers of the more than 500 currently in danger of disconnection have taken advantage of the opportunity to get their bills paid. An additional 11 customers have tapped the funds to assist with past-due American Electric Power bills.

There is money to help residential customers pay their bills,” said PSA General Manager Tim Hall. “In order to access that money, all a residential customer has to do is reach out to Social Services and follow a very easy process to verify eligibility. It is hard to understand why more residents haven’t taken advantage of this simple task to help get their bills paid.”

Any residential customers at risk for disconnection should contact HMDSS as soon as possible to access the funds. Once verified, residential customers can have up to 50% of their outstanding balances paid.

Once that occurs, payment plans for the remaining balance could be implemented.

“The PSA has provided multiple notifications to each customer account in danger of disconnection,” Hall said. “We’ve also done our best to communicate through various regular media and social media sites about this issue and the availability of the CARES money at Social Services. The money is there for residential customers to use.”

Residential customers who have received notifications about their past-due bills, or otherwise are aware that their bills are past due, should contact Social Services at (276) 656-4300 as soon as possible to access the CARES Act funding.

Any questions regarding other billing issues should be directed to the PSA Customer Service office by dialing (276) 634-2500 and pressing “1” for billing.
